Application Procedures

In order to apply you must first identify 2 faculty members to write letters of recommendation for you.  Discuss the internship with them and let them know to expect. Next, start an application and enter the email addresses of your references so that they will receive the link to submit their letters.  You should do this BEFORE you are ready to submit your application to give them time to write and submit your letter.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Letters of recommendation must be received by the February 1, 2018 deadline in order for your application to be considered.  Please remind your references of the deadline.

Online application

You will be required to upload the following documents.

  • Resume (PDF or Word) including any honors, awards, and relevant activities.
  • Application Essay (PDF or Word) In <800 words, tell us about yourself and why you are interested in this internship including:
    • Your commitment to journalism;
    • Your thoughts about science and science writing;
    • Your career goals;
    • What you hope to get out of this opportunity.
    • Include any classes, experiences, affiliations, etc. that you think will make you an ideal candidate for this internship.
  • Two writing samples (PDF or Word) At least one should be about a news event that took place after October 15, 2016.
  • Unofficial transcripts (PDF, Word or Jpeg)  of your undergraduate course work

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicants will be evaluated by a committee composed of experts in communicating science to the public. The committee will make recommendations to the AAAS staff, who are responsible for the final selection.
